Home Sweet Home Scroll Saw Pattern.

The holiday season is approaching fast. I want to encourage you to use your woodworking talent to make at least some of the gifts you give. When you give a hand made gift you are telling the person they are special. You appreciate them enough to do more than open your wallet. You are willing to take the time to give them something that is worth more than money.

The gift does not have to be something complex. It can be as simple as a key chain or a desk name plate. If you know the person has a special hobby or passion try to find a project that incorporates that. If you can make it personal they will like it even better.

Don't be reluctant if you have not mastered your skills yet. No mater what skill level you are you can make a nice gift. There are hundreds of free patterns in my free online catalog in many different categories to choose from. Sue Mey and Sheila Landry both have patterns that will make beautiful gifts.

Find a pattern you are comfortable with and make someone happy with a wonderful handmade gift.

Terry Foltz, Scroll saw artist.

Sorry that things have been slow on the blog for the last few days. My day job has been very busy the last week. I'm putting in lots of overtime so there has not been much time to play. I don't have a pattern tonight but I did want to share a link to a scroll saw artist named Terry Foltz. Terry cuts some stunningly beautiful natural edge scenes. Most of his scenes are outdoor and wildlife. Take a few minutes to check out his work.

Scroll Saw Basket Pattern.

It's been a while since I have designed a scroll saw basket. These are one of my favorite patterns. They are easy to cut and look more complicated than they are. This pattern only has five interior cuts. I used 1/4" thick walnut for the top and bottom. The four weave parts are 1/2" Thick. If you have not tried one of these take a look at the pattern and give it a try.

The Hunter, Scroll Saw Pattern.

There are still millions of deer hunters in the United States. The sport has declined over the years and in many places the deer are over populated. This is not only bad for the deer it's bad for our forests. Many states have tried to manage the deer population but the effects on the environment can be long lasting. Song birds who prefer to nest in shrubs and intermediate canopy layer declined drastically where the White Tail deer were out of control. That's just one of many negatives to the over population.

Controlled and managed hunting can be very advantageous to our environment. In many areas the balance between predator and prey has been lost from the destruction of the their natural habitat. In those areas it is our responsibility to help manage that balance. Hunters play a vital roll in that management.

Our society is more detached from nature than any society in history. For our distant relatives hunters were a vital part of their existence. They were highly respected for their skill. Without these skilled hunters they were likely to have a very difficult time surviving. Today we have made life much easier. We can run to the grocery for our goods. That's fine but it does not mean we should let those skills disappear forever.

It's unfortunate that in some circles hunting has received a negative image. I support our hunters. I also support having regulations on the impact they have on our wilderness. Wildlife needs to be protected from destructive hunting practices. We only have so much wilderness left and it is one of the highest responsibilities we hold to protect it. Once it's gone it's gone. Every state has laws that govern hunting. I encourage you to support both the hunter and the enforcement of the laws.

Cat Mom, Dog Mom Scroll Saw Patterns.

My wife and I have been married 35 years. We raised a beautiful daughter who has now moved out and started her own adult life. About two years ago I decided to buy my wife a small puppy to keep her company at home while I was at work. One problem, my wife is allergic to fur. Because of this she was never a big fan of animals in the house. My daughter had bought a dog after she moved out. It was a multi-poo. My wife discovered she did not have any symptoms while around this dog. She slowly became attached to my daughters dog. That gave me a chance to get her the puppy for Christmas. To be honest I love dogs and I think I wanted it for me as much as for my wife.

I purchased Holly from a breeder and was able to bring her home before Christmas. That turned out to be a huge change in both our lives. If you are an animal owner you already know just how attached you can get to them.

My wife now talks to Holly like she is her mom.  Holly has been great company to my wife. She constantly amazes us with her intelligence. When we would say the word "outside" Holly would run to the back door. We thought that was cool. To keep from disappointing Holly when it was wet outside My wife started spelling O-U-T S-I-D-E. Holly would still run to the back door. OK I know she can't spell but she obviously picks up on our mannerism or something.

It's been a blessing to have Holly in our home for the last two years. I know many of you understand exactly what I'm talking about. This pattern is for those of you who also have a four legged family member.

Mr. "M's" Workshop

I want to share a website with all of you today. Gaylen Montgomery and his wife Karen give workshops in the Branson Missouri area. Their workshops include the Scroll Saw  and mini lathe. Gaylen has been teaching scroll saw skills for many years to hundreds of craftsmen.

One of the more common emails I receive is "Where can I get hands on training for the scroll saw?" For those of you not familiar with the Branson area it is one of the top vacations spots in America. There are over 100 shows for your entertainment. This might be a great opportunity to schedule a vacation and enjoy one of Gaylens workshops while you are there. The workshops are $69+tax for a 3 hour session. The class times are 10am to 1pm  and 2pm to 5pm. If you are new to the scroll saw you can learn a great deal from a workshop. There is nothing better than hands on training with a skilled teacher. I don't think the workshops in Branson are year round so check with Gaylen for dates.

Gaylen also offers workshops in the Omaha and SW Iowa areas. You can check out all the details at
   http://www.mrmsworkshop.com/.
